Anne Marie Fraleigh
Growing up at RR#4 Wallaceburg, Anne Marie Fraleigh knew all about competition as she was one of eleven children of Frances and Francis Fraleigh. As a young girl, she loved to skate anywhere she could, from frozen ponds to the Snye River. At the age of 14, her family moved to Wallaceburg at 48 Minnie Street and she took up figure skating with Susan Asselstine for a year. Susan was inducted into the WSHOF in 1992.
At this point in her life, Anne Marie decided to give hockey a try and it would prove to be a good choice. She would go on to play for Wallaceburg, Tilbury, Point Edward and Dresden competing all over Ontario and Michigan. During the 1980s, she would move out west to Fort Mc Murray, Alberta. At that time, there was no womens hockey in Fort McMurray, so she decided to play in a mens league but she found it too crazy and brutal. That is when it was time to try coaching. Anne Marie became a trailblazer as she was the first womens coach in Fort Mc Murray minor hockey, and the first womens coach in St. Albert minor hockey. As well, she coached for the Wolfpack summer Elite hockey team in Edmonton. Not limited to just hockey over the years, she also played basketball, volleyball, track and field, gymnastics, swimming and field lacrosse.
She eventually moved to back to Wallaceburg where they have lived for 27 years. Now retired, she takes in the odd Oilers game but her greatest joy is watching her grandchildren play sports.
Her motto is “to keep young you have to keep moving”.
