The 1984 Griffins were a team with a wide variety of experience, with half the squad consisting of veterans who had played lacrosse for most of their lives and the other half with very little experience. Two of the boys had never played organized lacrosse in their lives. And the job of molding these players into a cohesive unit was up to Head Coach Ric Mathany. Charlie Babbitt was the trainer and equipment manager and took care of all of the behind the scenes stuff. Norm Cole stepped up at mid season to run the practices and keep the team sharp when Coach Mathany was moved to the afternoon shift by his employer.

During their historic 1984 season, they won the Consolation Trophy in a tournament in Guelph and was a finalist in a tournament in St. Catherines. They won the prestigious Fred Conradi Memorial Tournament (also in St. Catherines) and then later in the summer, they became the Ontario Intermediate C Champions by winning the Provincial Championship Tournament in Sarnia.

Coach Mathany described these guys as a true team who all performed their jobs and knew their roles. He quoted legendary coach Bill Belichek in saying “Everyone did their job - Well!”
